Subject: Dumb idea that works: the F30’s door to the oil drain plug often gets in the way of the oil as it drains. I rigged this up today and it worked. Sharing the idea in case anyone else have the same issue. Binder clip + cable tie + gaffer tape.

I am a regular dude who loves cars. I've always enjoyed driving cars. My first BMW was a 2003 BMW 3 series (i think 330i). My wife and I ordered that car in a black-on-black spec. We got it about 4-5 months after our wedding. We absolutely loved it. Sadly I had to get rid of it, and bought a G35. Then once my second son came along, we decided to sell the G35 coupe. I got a 2004 Lexus GS, and I got my wife a brand new 2008 Acura MDX. I still have that MDX, it is a fantastic car. I then traded my 2004 GS for a 2014 Infiniti Q50. I hated the Infiniti, and so in 2015 I bought a CPO 2013 Lexus GS350 F sport. In May 2020 my son got his permit and my wife needed a new car. My son was gonna get the 2008 MDX so we needed a 3rd car. In September 2020 we bought a Tesla Model Y, we've put 27k miles on that car so I'm very familiar with it. The Model Y will be my reference point for this post. (I understand the Model Y and i4 are not competitors, but that's the best reference I have)

The Exterior/Storage:

The exterior of the i4 M50 was very nice, it looked like a gas-powered vehicle, unlike the Model Y's egg ugly shape. I thought it definitely looked better than the Model 3 and Y from Tesla. The charging port was in the exact same spot as the gas cap on the regular 4 series. The Trunk was extremely roomy and had a nice opening allowing you to get bigger cargo into the vehicle. I was disappointed that there wasn't a front trunk though, most EV's have one. The i4 is not a dedicated EV, it is a gas vehicle converted into electric. I found a few places where this was very apparent.

The Interior:

The interior was gorgeous compared to a tesla. Everything was very premium and felt very nice. Everything was soft touch, definitely way nicer than my Model Y. I loved the leather seats. The center screen was very responsive. The Apple Carplay was so cool. It is completely full screen (minus the AC controls at the bottom which are fixed). The interior felt very traditional, I loved the interior. I prefer the interior over the Tesla 100%. The steering wheel felt padded and was larger than my Model Y. The gauge cluster screen also was nice. One thing I like about my Tesla is the way that the spedometor shows every number. If I go from 0-60, it'll show every number. The BMW numbers jump, it'll go from 30-34 but wont show 31,32, or 33. I didn't really like that. The rear size was fine, I bet about the same size as the Model 3. The rear also had the transmisson hump in the middle instead of being a completely flat floor like the Tesla. Anyways, the BMW wins the interior over the Tesla, at least in my opinion. BMW quality is unmatched.

The Drive:

Well, its quick as hell. Absolutely insane. It is for sure quicker than the 3.7 claimed. My Model Y is rated at 4.8 0-60. I scared the living heck out of my son in the back to the point where he said "holy $hit". It was hilarious. It felt like a roller coaster. I legitimately enjoyed driving the car, on the straights. The steering was a bit disapointing. I drive the Y in the sport setting for steering. The Y is very precise and is tight to steer. The tesla has a heavy wheel when you want, and a very light wheel when you want. The i4 didn't feel tight. The steering felt too loose and I felt like it wasn't as direct as I wanted it to be, even in sport mode. I loved the throttle mapping, but the steering felt weird. I came home after the drive and watched some reviews of the i4 M50i. Thomas from Throttle House and Kyle from Out of Spec Reviews both agreed the steering wasn't that great. I feel like the Model 3 Performance would probably be better at handling compared to the i4 M50. The suspension was great in the i4. The Model Y doesn't have adaptive dampers and is very firm. I legitimately hate the suspension in the Model Y. It is by far the biggest drawback of the car. The car was very comftorable in comfort mode, and firmer in Sport mode. I felt the suspension was perfect in sport mode. It felt exactly like my 2013 Lexus GS, it was perfect.


I really enjoyed my time in the i4 M50i. If I were looking for the i4 M50i or a Model 3 Performance it would be a very tough pick. The i4 they had on the lot was about $72,000, while I could get a Model 3 Performance for $64,000. (I did not include any TTL in either of the prices). The i4 does come with a $7,500 tax credit, however I don't know how it works. Out of the two, I prefer the BMW. It has phenonemal quality, and I liked the more traditional interior. The interior would be more comfortable for a longer trip in the BMW.

Will I sell my Tesla?

I won't sell the Tesla until the supercharger network opens in the US. We drove the Model Y from Dallas to Florida and back. We also take it to Houston and back from Dallas once every 3 months. Having the charging network is important to us. I loved the interior so much I am probably going to get myself an M440i for around town while my wife drives the Model Y. I think the Model Y is a fantastic vehicle, but I love driving a sedan.

My First Track Event! (Modded 2014 335i @ Dominion Raceway)

I participated in a Track Attack at Virginia's Dominion Raceway with my 2014 335i and it was incredibly exhilarating and I learned a lot! For those unfamiliar with the concept, Track Attacks are basically super beginner-friendly events where there is no passing and you keep the same speed as the pace car. They go slow on the first couple of laps, but gradually increase speeds to the point they're pushing the limits of what you're comfortable with.

There were 22 participants that day, including a 2022 M4, 850i, a few Ford Mustangs of various years, a couple VW Golfs, a Porsche, a Chevy Camaro, a heavily modified Ford Focus and Honda Civic, a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo, and a Mazda SUV. Almost everyone there was tuned or modified.

The day was close to 100 degrees and my tires were definitely hot by the time I got there. Since I was running Michelin Pilot Sport 4S's, I read that the recommended hot pressure was mid-30 PSI so I used my gauge to lower it to 35 before the event. After that, checked in, sat in the classroom for instructions and rules on driving, and then hit the track!

We did three sessions of about 7 laps in a 2 mile course with the speeds gradually increasing each lap. Started at 40MPH and the fastest I managed to go was 110MPH on the straight before I had to slow down. Despite how safe the event was, a Ford Mustang still managed to spin out onto the grass which kind of adds to the "Crowd Magnet" stereotype lol.

Things I learned:

- I needed to work a lot more on my braking and cornering. Apparently, I've developed the bad habit of going into turns too fast and tapping on the brakes as I cornered. It was causing the distance between my car and the car in front to increase since I wasn't cornering efficiently. My experience playing racing sims did help me imagine the driving line though, especially on the chicane which everyone else insisted on swerving rather than staying straight.

- M-sport Brakes and tires gripped phenomenally and the tire wear pattern looked good!

- Despite 100-degree weather, I was pleasantly surprised to see the car did not overheat or even touch the middle of the temperature gauge.

- I might need to go from Stage 1 to Stage 2 for this.

- Bring lots of water! You definitely want to stay hydrated.

Definitely a fun experience and I'd love to do this again. However, I want to do some autocross to practice cornering and dexterity more since it's something I need to work on the most. Alternatively, drive with an instructor who can point out what I need to improve on.
