Subject: Upgraded MiSTer SDRAM to 128mb, now neither SDRAM module functions

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

So I upgraded my 32mb RAM to 128mb in preparation for the CPS2 core, and at first everything was peachy. Tested some Neogeo games and everything worked just fine, but I powered off my MiSTer to mess with a few things on the SD card and upon powering it back on, the SDRAM no longer worked. To troubleshoot I then switched back to my old 32mb RAM to see if that would work, but no dice. Both sticks are recognized by MiSTer in the menu (and the 32mb shows up in memtest, whereas the 128 no longer does), but no games or cores requiring SDRAM will boot. I also tried a completely fresh install of MiSTer with no change whatsoever.

I've checked the continuity between the pins of the chips to the best of my abilities and there doesn't seem to be any bridged connections, and everything seems to be soldered to the board correctly, so I'm at a loss in that regard.

So my questions are: what did I break, do I need a new DE-10, and can anybody possibly help me to see what I'm doing wrong?

Edit: So now neither SDRAM module will show up in memtest, but both still show the icon on the menu, so something is definitely wrong, it's just a matter of figuring out what.

Subject: Widescreen CRT

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I have a widescreen CRT TV (480p). I can’t force it to 4:3 mode via the front-panel menu, and the TV doesn’t receive commands from a remote to change screen modes. As a result, everything is stretched.

Any suggestions on how to force a 4:3 picture from Mister by adding borders or some other setting? I’m connected over component. https://i.imgur.com/i0bskkL.jpg

Subject: Can you use a custom background when using the Analog output of a MiSTer?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I'm trying to use custom art I find out there, naming them menu.jpg/png, place them in the root direct, restarted the system, no go, still go static.

I tried creating a Wallpapers folder, putting the image in there, restarted the system, no go, still go static.

What gives, is it because I'm outputting via RGB out and not HDMI?

Hi,

I have the first commercial games running on my new Atari Lynx core.

Still way to go, but it's time to show now.

Subject: Issues Getting CPS1 and 1.5 MiSTer Cores to Work

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I've had my MiSTer for about a week and have absolutely love everything about it. The only problem I've had is getting the CPS1 and 1.5 cores to work. No matter what I try nothing happens when I attempt to load a game.

I have the cores saved in the same folder as my other arcade cores and MRA files along with my other arcade games. I've tried placing the zipped roms in the "games/mame" folder along with my other arcade roms. I've also tried placing them in a "_Arcade/mame" folder to no avail. I'm using roms from a .217 set.

Any ideas on why these aren't working?

Also, I'm curious why these cores aren't appearing when I run the "update" script. I had to get them from Jotego's github. Are there any other scripts I could run to get this to work? I've seen posts about a Retrodriven script, but I can't find that anywhere.

Thanks for help!

Subject: Wow! 10,000 subscribers!

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

After around 4 years, r/fpgagaming has finally hit 10,000 readers!

I don't really have anything profound to say about it. But, having created this sub as a simple way to keep track of updates for various FPGA gaming projects across different forums this place has gone way beyond my original expectations.

(And that's not because of anything that I did by making a dumb little subreddit for myself and posting a few links.)

it's really thanks to everybody out there who creates these awesome projects, as well as the entire community of fans like me who get excited about sharing news, talking about, and playing with all of the cool technology that will not only keep vintage gaming alive for many decades to come, but also allow people to create new features and content for old systems like never before.

I was super excited about this stuff when I started this sub, but thanks to all of you (here, on the classic gaming discord, on the various forums, on twitter, youtube, patreon, etsy, github, etc.) I'm even more excited about it today!

Thanks for joining me here everyone, and a big big thanks to all of you who have made contributions big and small to this cool little scene! :)

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Hi -

i'm no electronics genius, so i want to solicit some opinions from folks more familiar with this project:

Is there any problem with soldering up the USB 2.1 board leaving out the LEDs? I don't like the lights if they are just for 'looks'.

Thanks for your input ~

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I am new to this FPGA stuff, I have been on the sidelines and watching it all. But today I found a NEC PX-42VM5HA Plasma Sync. I looked it up and it looked fantastic. So I decided I was going to use it for a mister build, But with the Inputs it has. Got me wondering what would be the best way to hook the mister up too it?

Thank you.

Hello all, How are you doing? I am new to fpgagaming, I have been looking at consoles by Analogue Mega SG + Super NT with Everdrives by Krikzz.
Do you use these as well as emulation software on PC? I also currently looked into other options for retro gaming systems/consoles & emulation hardware/software solutions.

Subject: Finally using a 3D Printed Case

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

https://imgur.com/a/f9Jj44d

Finally using a cheap-ass 3d printed case on my MiSTer. Cost $16 to get it printed. Harvested the fan from an old Pi 4 case. Beats having to pay $35-50 for an acrylic case, which requires an additional $50 USB Hub and a $50 IO board. I know I've said it before on this sub and have people outrage over this, but there is 0 justification in charging $35-50 for an SoC acrylic case, no matter how small the scale of production. I get that purists like those cases, but for those who are budget conscious about their DIY retro gaming kits should just get the 3d printed one until something cheaper is out there. After all, you're just going to put the damn thing on the TV shelf and not have it look ridiculous. Shouldn't cost an arm and a leg to do that.

Subject: MiSTer + 8bitdo M30 2.4g (wired) issue

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Hey all, I searched but couldn't find a direct answer. I'm trying to use my 8bitdo M30 Genesis controller (the kind with the actual Genesis adapter) directly plugged in via USB. When I try to map, it shows an SNES controller layout and it won't define it as a Genesis controller. I tried a different port (using OTG adapter) and rebooted, and it didn't show. Does it need to be changed from x-input to something else? How do I do that. Thanks from a n00b.
