I can see not wanting to tackle fermentation, but the hardest thing about broth is straining it. Mostly you just put it on low and stir it now and then.

Maybe it is the *motivation* that I lack. I don't get the same thrill out of cooking that other men do. It is the same with crafts like woodworking. I understand the satisfaction of making something and realizing it is GOOD. I just don't have the desire to do it. But I totally respect other people who do.

Gotcha. I learned at a tender age and branched out quick, so it's just a part of my daily life. Some people tinker with FPGA's...

in my family everyone cooks, it's totally normal and everyone has things they're especially good at, so while I can bake I never do, and I wouldn't say I'm good at it, even though fresh hot bread is one of the greatest things ever.  Bone broth is super easy, though, and extra good for you, so when I have some nice bones I like to go a little out of my way to do it.  I'm down to one container left of my vegetable stew and it was worth the relatively small effort.

I hadn't considered that there is a somewhat cultural element to being even aware that bone-broth soup is a thing. My wife buys broth in a box, my grandmother used bullion cubes, so did my mother. 

And when I cook, everything comes from boxes, cans and jars that were bought commercially. 

But - there is a "frontier" element to your religious background. Not exactly "preppers," but "self-sustainers".

My religion is flat out prepper.  They say to have at least a year's supply on hand if possible, and if you can really get into it, go for 5 or 10.  But yeah, we're hardcore about self sustainability which is why when the depression hit, my church started buying farms and building canneries so we can provide for the needy and help them gain the skills needed to do it themselves.  The LDS church welfare system is the envy of governments worldwide.  Many of the prepper companies that will sell you freeze dried food that will last a decade and give you a years supply are based in Utah, too.  It's just part of the culture to recognize that shit can hit the fan any time and we should be ready for that.  If it never comes, then awesome.  If it does, we'll be feeding ourselves at a minimum and most likely the neighbors too.

You're not like, gun-nut survivalist end-times prophets - though. Of the churches that are considered "cult-like," yours is WAY more mainstream at this point than then JW, 7DA or Scientologists. 

True story, my wife wanted to buy her grandmother a puzzle - and had seen a Christian bookstore out in Gilbert near the CostCo. We went in, and were walking around, and everyone was blonde and blue eyed and had clear complexions and healthy glows and they were all smiling and polite and pleasant... 

And I'm looking around, and it is dawning near me.. I mean, we're about 3 miles from the Big Temple... and I kinda whisper into her ear, "Hey... uh..." and without hearing me, she goes, "this isn't our Jesus..." 

And I go, "WHA?!?" 

And look over at her, and she points down to a book cover... 




"Not our Jesus... this is a MORMON bookstore..." 

I was like, "that is what I was trying to tell you..." 

"Our" Jesus isn't even THAT white... 



And don't even get me started about CATHOLIC Jesus...

I'll take a hard pass on that. I am an Italian Grandmother. I will cook for anyone.

I'm the same.  If you enter my house I'm giving you food, and I probably cooked it myself, and if there's not already food it will only take a couple minutes, really it's no trouble at all, sit and enjoy.

I always think it's funny when people get mad at artists depicting Jesus as any particular race.  Why wouldn't you paint what you know?  Black or Korean or White or Brown or whatever.  Doesn't matter to me.

I always point out that the guy could cure the blind and infirm, walk on water, and drive demons out of the possessed among other feats - like um... 

You don't think he could stand in a crowd, and EVERY person would perceive him exactly as made them most COMFORTABLE with him.

They hanged him from a cross until he died, and a couple days later, he was up and around again - and people seem to have an issue with the idea who could appear as a black man, or whatever *else* he wanted to be seen as.

Men generally prefer to grill, and make foods that are simpler instead of complex.

It's absolutely male dominated.  9 out of 10 people working back of house are men.  It's hot, stressful, uncomfortable, dangerous, all the things women avoid like the plague when given an option unless they have a passion.  I've worked in a lot of kitchens and the girls I met were super cool but also rare as hell.

Spanish Catholic Jesus doesn't look like Egyptian (Coptic) Jesus. I saw white and Semitic Jesuses growing up, and it doesn't change the symbolism for me at all. I've seen blue marble Jesuses in LDS buildings and bronze or walnut Jesuses hanging on cathedral walls and necklaces. Amusingly, olivewood seems to be the nicest triple point: complexion, locality, and symbolism.

That's it, my new sect of Christianity stans only olivewood Jesi.

As for food, I've been cooking for a clan of eight or nine people since I was thirteen. I don't have any use for a taxonomy that disqualifies manliness on those grounds. Go tell the camp cook that he's not a man. He'll die for you same as the next soldier. Humbug. 

I'm cool with Jesus however he looks. Black Jesus makes me a little nervous - but that is because I grew up in a rough side of town during a time when ethnic social groups were still very clearly delineated, so there were a lot of conflict.

Today I cooked about 2 pounds of beef liver on my roasting pan.  I overcooked it a little because I'm not used to meat being that thin, but the flavour was just about right.  Next time it's getting a light bath of Worcestershire to enhance the flavour, but my basic default of salt pepper onion and garlic works for everything.  It was just about perfect.  If I'd left it in another half hour it would be jerky lol
