Rooms with a lot of images will take a while to load when the room gets large, because it only feeds them to you at 5gb/sec.

Rooms with a lot of images take a while to load before the screen refreshes, and it makes it seem like the BBS may have crashed.

At 5gb/sec - as long as it seems like the BBS is doing something (there is something spinning somewhere...) you should be patient. :)

Two months later because I keep forgetting to log in... I absolutely despise the "Like" button on venues other than Twatter and Bookface.  Very little annoys me more than me getting a long text for a second time because someone couldn't be assed to send a smiley (whether Unicode or ASCII.)  Note, this is coming from someone who is 95% lurk :P

I cannot find the "like" button.  This facebook sucks.

I have literally plead my case with the developers that a like button is a necessary evil for at least the webcit. It encourages content creators to create more content, and it allows lurkers to interact without actually saying anything. It is really the one brilliant mechanism that the social media giants stumbled on.

It is where you get the Facebook dopamine rush. The Like button is the crack cocaine of online communities.

Glad to have you here, Sean.

But, let's face it, if the world were designed to appease you - it would be a much different place. Not necessarily a worse place. I assume it would be far less populous, though - for starters.

People like the Like Button because it is a banal way to show agreement - it is kind of like a mouse pressing a button and getting a piece of cheese, in most cases. People like getting a Like because it releases that little endorphin rush of being acknowledged and affirmed.

I am OK with both *being* one of those lab rats and treating my users like those kind of lab rats - in as much as "it is what they want, anyhow, so why not make them happy?"

It also does encourage engagement - and I need that shit here... because some days, when traffic is low, I find myself wondering, "Why am I paying for this shit?"

Speaking of which... that is a topic for another room.

Now you can see how just two people, skipping from room to room, can eat up an entire night creating content on a Citadel - distracting from feeding big social media like Twitter and Facebook content - and why they are afraid of this.

Imagine if there were a dozen people all logged in, skipping from room to room, creating and following up on messages, in real time... the kind of traffic this could generate. The potential for disruption of big social media's lock on this kind of communication.

It was just you and I tonight. Imagine if Ig and Google Bot and Otto Roboto and Wangiss had all been in on it too.

This is CITADEL!

There or 4 or 5 of them.

The damage we could do.

LOL you say that like I wasn't a regular on Bantoom and Hotel.  I've long been a proponent of bringing back BBSes.

I had a good long talk with Ig, the guy who writes Citadel and runs Uncensored, tonight.

We need to get you up and running a Citadel, TheDave - we're going to disrupt Social Media, one Citadel at a time - and you're going to help. ;)

Yeah, I had a list of 30 BBSes I would dial into, but mostly for the door games.  When I was 13 I would go to sleep at 6pm so I could wake up at 2am and call all the boards.  I learned real fast not to bother with Hotel or Bantoom at that time because that's when they would be dialling the other boards to do the FidoNet cross-room dump, so I saved those for last after I was done taking all my turns in TradeWars 2002 and Legend of the Red Dragon.  I played Usurper and Netrunner, too, and I didn't want my family picking up the line or getting pissed that I was hogging the only computer.

I'd be happy to run a citadel.  I think everyone who wants one should get one.

You got me looking into Online Door solutions. I think doors and local games would be awesome - with the benefit that a person only playing a game wouldn't stop other callers from creating content. Doors were a double edged sword back in the day - they would increase congestion on the BBS, increase demand - but the BBS could turn into a ghost-town because everyone was playing games.

But Tradewars is still a thing - and I'd love to run a local instance of it and have it accessible through a door/gateway inside the BBS.

You may have experienced some downtime today. Creating an image of the BBS onto another drive as a backup.

I also had a list of BBSs that I went thru daily to take my turn in door games.  I also spent a bit of time on Hotel, among others.  I do miss some of them archaic door games with their ASCII art for graphics.  And the conversations that we could generate.

Door games were a big driver for me for a period of time. Trade Wars 2000, anyhow.

I don't think the rest I was really excited about.

BBS is now on the default secure connection port. Not a real good way for me to let everyone know that. If you see anyone complaining about the BBS down, let them know to refresh their cache and to just connect to https://secure.wallofhate.com not https://secure.wallofhate.com:4916

I can't reach CTYZ - either he picked up a Facebook ban or he quit it altogether. It could be either. Hopefully he figures it out. I'd miss his presence here.

Yeah. If you go to http://wallofhate.com and click the link from there, it should redirect you with the :4916 removed too.

Although you may have to hit F5 to update that page if you have it in your cache.

There isn't a lot I can do to change that - it happens on your machine, not mine. Eventually it should clear... your cache has a TTL (time to live) after which it should theoretically refresh a webpage in case changes have been made.

But until then, if you don't know, the BBS will seem down. But I had to make the change. I think it'll make the BBS run better, more reliably.
