You're ready for Ready Player 1.

I'd point out, it was actually a dystopia. ;)

You may be right - but I feel like the world was a better place when highly intelligent uber-nerds were socially ostracized, marginalized and disempowered.

I mean, the concept sounds cool. But the more social media has moved forward....

The more I want to return to a simple text based Citadel on dialup.

Thu Feb 11 2021 12:54:06 MST from Wangiss

I'm going to try and leapfrog the next two social networks by hopping into whatever looks like

(a) DSpace as represented in Daniel Suarez' duology DAEMON and Freedom(TM)

and/or

(b) the metaverse as represented in Neal Stephenson's novel Snow Crash

So I'm getting my IoT chops right now so I can set up a microbroadcasting antenna pair, which would enable an encrypted floating callout over my head when I want one. Standardizing the wave strength would allow accurate triangulation of the broadcast source. I'm learning Python and I'm glad someone decided to make a language with such natural syntax. It's probably only possible because of the enormous computing power available now, but to quote Max Bialystock, if you've got it, flaunt it.

And I'm going to 3D scan my cottage office so I can have friends over and we can hang out in there. If we have too many people in there we can just go miniature. I have a funny little Japanese diarama bookend we could hang out in. Here's a link to the pic:

And I could put other things in there. Anyway, we'll see if the latest update to the photogrammetry app on my phone is any better than the one that couldn't scan a wrench two years ago, lol.

It doesn't help that 2/3rds of my user base are fucking MORMONS.

Are, in more transparent language.... 2 or the 5 people who log in here.

We need more users.

I don't care what denomination they are.

I'm pretty non-judgey that way, being fairly certain that after exploring all world religions... if they have a hell, I'm PROBABLY going to end up there.

But, I still suspect God of being a funny, tricky entity (PC-language Trigger Warning).

I can just see the Creator letting me in while kicking all of you down into the lake of fire while going, "you didn't get it. PD totally nailed it!"

Like an Oprah episode.

Probably not. I'm a bad gambler.

But... I'm putting my money on "Salvation for me, damnation for thee," for all y'all.

If it helps, Mormons don't think you're going to hell.  We don't believe in traditional Christian hell.  We believe in Heaven, Better Heaven, and Best Heaven.  If you need to pay for sins you get to hang out in spirit jail for a while until you work through your shit, which I guess is kinda like hell, but not really what most people think of when you use that word.

And you still secretly baptize *everyone* you can just in case.

You guys are really the *nicest* religious people. Every other religion is like, "Those dudes are going to hell, nuthin' we can do about it. Not even gonna try..."

You guys are like "let's see if we can sneak 'em in to the party!"

Yeah, Mormon hell is a state of consciousness, not a place. You can experience it anywhere. Essentially you compare yourself with the ideal and feel terrible. You realize the actual suffering you've caused yourself and others with perfect clarity. It's excruciating and eventually it's over. But it's always there if you need it again.

As for damnation, the people who aren't given the law aren't judged by the law. It would be unjust to hold people to a standard they had no notion of. So because I've accepted the law, I'm damned as often as I screw up. And then when I repent I'm un-damned. It's a constant process more than only a Judgment Day event. There have been prophets like Isaiah who were told to stop teaching the people because they would just reject it and reap worse results than they should. No sense damning a hundred thousand Israelites unnecessarily.

The same sort of thing is going on in China right now. It's illegal to proselytize there. So missionaries don't go there. Nobody will be judged by the laws they don't have. But they're getting an earthly experience and that's enough. Not everyone on the planet is here for an LDS experience, which has its pluses and minuses. The mode (average) human is a poor 30-year-old Han Chinese woman. And that's all part of the fascinating earth story.

What about people who are incapable of feeling this hell as a state of consciousness. Mormonism seems very susceptible to psychopaths and other folks who clinically do not connect with normal human perceptions of "right/wrong".

The "Catch me if you Can," guy - there is a famous quote where when he got busted, he couldn't really understand why people were upset that he had defrauded him. "My frauds were as good or better than the original things. They should have been happy."

When you're that incapable of understanding regular human values... you don't feel morality the same way regular people do, I'd guess.

Most people don't ever feel the totality of their guilt. (It's fair to expect they'll see more clearly when they encounter Christ.) And those who don't have the faculty for guilt must do the best they can with enculturation and whatever empathy they can obtain. I'm in no position to judge them, personally. I don't know what constitutes moral fault from a perfectly just perspective.

Man, the lefties on my feeds are obsessed with damning Rush Limbaugh to hell. Or they would be if they weren't almost all completely godless. I'm sure that hoping we win a war and preferring people not chemically castrate their children or whatever they imagine Limbaugh did (you can't convince me they ever listened to a full hour) are really terrible sins in their cult, but none of them have any kids so I guess it's a self-solving problem.

Growing up in Sacramento with a right-libertarian father was awesome for me. Somehow the other kids didn't especially much out of it. Or maybe they just can't contextualize a father's life, not having parented yet. Limbaugh was on our radio all the time. He was entertaining and bombastic. He taught me to question authority.

Requiescat in pace, Rush.

Yeah, when I heard that Limbaugh had passed, I basically went down my decision tree and said, "Either I voluntarily avoid big social media for a few days, or I'm going to end up saying things to people that get me involuntarily removed for longer than that."

I was already having a difficult time dealing with Social Media lefties this week as it was.

The weird thing about believing someone is going to hell is that the bible specifically says not to worry about them going to hell - to worry about YOURSELF going to hell.

And people seem to miss that. Again - that has been one of my interesting observations about the LDS. They're trying to do things that, from a Protestant perspective, are requirements in avoiding hell. I can't think of any other Christian faith that does that.

As a Protestant I also find it a little presumptuous to do something of this nature on someone's behalf without their request - but that is more of an English culture thing than a specific religious value. :)

But in many ways, being an English Protestant is more about being a Good Englishman than it is about being a Good Christian, even still in America.

Yeah, the idea is "Give everyone the ordinances so they can decide for themselves", not "We're gonna make you be our faith Mwahahahahaha"

People be saying all sorts of shit about Limbaugh and I'm over here like "I listened to Rush for 20 years and I never heard any of what you're saying about him".  They can try to prove me wrong if they want, but they'll fail.

I was listening to Rush once, and he whatever it was he was saying, he paused slightly before and after the statement. When he said it, I had a premonition. Hearing what Rush said before and after changed everything, taken out of context the statement was pretty bad. When I got home that night the left wing blogs were taking that edited quote, and using it against him.  The news might have used it as well.

His senior producer, Snerdly was an African-American.  He had women on his staff. He wasn't sexist or racists.  People have said that he isn't the same in person as he is on the air.

Hilariously, none of the people I've challenged so far can even produce the out of context quotes.  I don't expect them to even be that good.  But yeah, he would do shit like that all the time.  Any comedian does.

People say the same thing about me. I'm basically a persona online, writing - but that is a character, like Stephen Colbert or Rush Limbaugh. It doesn't mean that character isn't parts of me - but it is still a "personality", not precisely who I am in real life.

I can turn him on in real life, though - when necessary. People usually don't enjoy that, but they've inevitably been asking for it before they get it.
