Subject: VitalSource Chaptered Epub screengrab script - Windows

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I spent a lot of time this week trying to figure out how to share a vitalsource epub i rented with my classmates. After most techniques failed, I ended up adapting one script I found on this sub to work with epubs that are "chapter locked" (you need to use a separate key to move between chapters). I also added OCR with pytesseract.

It works by using pyautogui to press "PageDown" between screengrabs, since I couldn't find any way to separate the epubs into "publisher pages" in the vitalsource bookshelf. After each screengrab it checks to see if it was identical to the last one, which would happen when you reach the end of a chapter and PageDown doesn't do anything. In this case, it presses ctrl + pagedown, the hotkey to go to next chapter in VitalSource Bookshelf 7.6.

The main issues with it now are:

  1. Pages overlap with each other - each page has a bit of the previous page at the start and next page at the bottom, although this is usually helpful for stopping images and paragraphs from being illegible. No idea how to fix this without having figures and text getting cut up.
  2. PDF size is pretty big - I compressed mine with ilovepdf.com afterwards but it's still pretty big, not sure if there's anything to be done about this.

In order to use, first install the latest Python 3 and the following libraries (all available through pip):

  • Pillow (for screengrab/image manipulation)
  • pyautogui (for key presses)
  • pytesseract (for OCR or reading the text)
  • PyPDF2 (for writing PDF)

Also install tesseract-OCR software from github.

Install VitalSource Bookshelf 7.6 for Windows 7&8, login to your account and download/open your textbook. Adjust the zoom and window size and hide the toolbar and other side clutter (View menu). Try to get it so when you hit the Pagedown key it moves approximately one publisher page (page number is in top right corner). Screenshot your entire display with Snipping tool or something, then open this screenshot in IrfanView or GIMP or Photoshop and record the pixel xy coordinates for the screenshot bounding box (top left and bottom right). Navigate to the cover page of your textbook.

Then, create a new text file and rename it to EpubScreenGrab.py. Paste the script from below into the file. Right click and choose "edit with IDLE". Edit the variables at the beginning to your setup (try testing it out by changing chapters to 1 and maxChapterLength to 3 and look at the resulting pdf to make sure your settings work before doing a whole book).

Run the script (press F5 if in IDLE) and you will have 5 seconds to switch to the VitalSource window, when the script will start running. Make sure to set your screen timeout to really long before you start so it doesn't quit after half an hour or something.

Hopefully it should run all the way through your textbook and you'll end up with a really big and janky PDF! Upload to libgen when you're done.

I'm kind of self taught when it comes to this kind of stuff and definitely not an expert so please let me know if you have any improvements to the script!

from PIL import ImageGrab from pyautogui import press, hotkey import pytesseract import time import PyPDF2 from io import BytesIO # IMPORTANT: Manually specify the dimensions for your screenshot # (The easiest way to do this is to screenshot your entire display with snipping tool etc. and open the image # in software like IrfanView, GIMP or photoshop to determine the x and y pixels in the four corners of where your page is.) X1 = 963 Y1 = 59 X2 = 1896 Y2 = 1034 # Enter number of chapters in book: chapters = 18 # optional config: maxChapterPages = 100 # increase this value if you have super long chapters (this is to stop infinite loops) newChapterTime = 20 # increase/decrease this value if it takes more/less than 20 seconds to load the images when you switch to a new chapter pageDownTime = 2 # similarly change this if it takes more/less than 2 seconds to load photos as you scroll through a chapter. outputPath = "Textbook.pdf" #enter relative path to your where you want to save # Point this to your tesseract.exe location if not added as PATH variable. (this is default location) pytesseract.pytesseract.tesseract_cmd = r'C:\Program Files\Tesseract-OCR\tesseract.exe' ######################## ######################## startTime = time.time() print("You have 5 seconds to switch to the textbook. Make sure you start on the cover page") for i in range(5): print (5-i) time.sleep(1) box = (X1, Y1, X2, Y2) pages=0 output = PyPDF2.PdfFileWriter() print('begin') def pageIsIdentical(image, imlist): if len(imlist) > 1: if list(image.getdata()) != list(imlist[len(imlist)-2].getdata()): return False else: print('current image == previous') return True else: return False for chapter in range(chapters): print(f'Chapter {chapter+1}') # begin scrolling through pages in chapter for i in range(0, maxChapterPages): im_list = [] im = ImageGrab.grab(bbox=box).convert('RGB') #screenshot print(f'Grabbed page {chapter+1} - {i+1}') im_list.append(im) # use tesseract to OCR image into pdf, then read with PyPDF2 for appending pdf = BytesIO(pytesseract.image_to_pdf_or_hocr(im, extension='pdf')) read_pdf = PyPDF2.PdfFileReader(pdf) # Check if most recent screenshot is identical to previous - indicating end of a chapter: if not pageIsIdentical(im, im_list): output.addPage(read_pdf.getPage(0)) pages+=1 else: break press("pagedown") time.sleep(pageDownTime) # arbitrary delay between screenshots print('next chapter') hotkey('ctrl', 'pagedown') # next chapter print(f'wait {newChapterTime} seconds for images to load (adjust at top)') time.sleep(newChapterTime) print(f"saving output to {outputPath}") with open(outputPath, "wb") as outputStream: output.write(outputStream) outputStream.close() elapsedTime = time.time() - startTime print('Completed {} pages in {:.2f} minutes'.format(pages, elapsedTime/60))

Subject: MPA /ACE The Real Company the refuses to get with the time

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I may been reading posts here lately and the same thought hits my brain everytime The movie industry has failed to accept that no matter what they do there will always be people sharing their files.I get it though they have to try to protect their interests but this going after every single source of piracy just hits me the wrong way.

if you wonder why the music industry has made less news then the movie industry i would say its because theyve gotten the message that sueing hundreds or thousands of people isnt going to work very well as a deterrant against future file sharing.

The music industry as a whole seems to accept more openly then the movie industry that pirating happens lets not try to kill it lets figure out how to make money from it.Seems wild to me the two different stratagies that each side employ.sometimes i wonder if its just me seeing this or its a wider acceptance that theMPA?ACE is stuck its head in the sand while promoting a lets make file shartors look like the devil .

Subject: It's so sad that I have to constantly use Stremio to watch films despite the fact that I paid for my Netflix.

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Because my phone is an Android which doesn't have the L3 or L1 ceritifcation whatever, I cannot watch films in FULL HD on Netflix. So I have to watch the films in Stremio where the films are being streamed 100% in HD, thanks to that my OLED screen can be utilized at it finest. Just want to rant, now I prefer Stremio much more, sometimes I have to use Netflix because some films don't have good seeds (quality) on Stremio.

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Broke ass researcher here trying to use tests to conduct good solid research without any money to spend on expensive gated tests. Wondering if there’s a community out there i can be directed to or a website. Specifically, I was looking for the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) or the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Functioning for adults (BRIEF-A), although any information is helpful as well. Thanks!

Subject: I Fixed Skillshare-DL - Download Skillshare courses for free

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Skillshare-DL has been around for a while (by calvinhobbes23?) but it broke a few months back.
I never bothered to post anything about it but I've been patching it for myself whenever it breaks. I mean the last break was just caused by a missing underscore in the file path.

Now, google has updated colab and made it so you can't mount google drives in the same way. My solution was to directly download the course instead of uploading to GDrive. The only problem is that it's incredibly slow to download for some reason (let me know if you know how to fix). The benefit of this version over previous ones is that you are no longer limited by your google drive free space, and you may not even need a google account (don't quote me on that).

Anyway, here's the link: https://colab.research.google.com/drive/1nZBy7OL3hTVo9XNHWZewqmfMqcCpO5n-?usp=sharing

Just activate the sections in order and make sure it finishes before starting the next one.
All the code to download the course should be accredited to the original creator, who was not named in the original version.
