Subject: 8bitdo Ultimate Wireless (2.4+BT) controller working on MiSTer?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Just got mine in the mail and expected it would just work, like my Pro 2 controller. But even though the 2.4 ghz receiver and controller seem to be linked (lights stay solid) the mister doesn’t recognize input.

Is mine broken? Or is it incompatible?

Holding USER on the mister to launch the “Define Buttons” tool doesn’t fix it - no inputs are recognized.

No, I’m not interested in connecting via Bluetooth - I’m using that for another platform.

Subject: Sony DS4 vs Dual Sense

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I’m looking to get either the DualShock 4 or Dual Sense (ps5) controller for my Mister setup.

I know there may be better options, but I’m looking for mouse touchpad functionality and the ability to have wired or Bluetooth options with a decent d pad.

Is one better than the other in terms of functionality and latency?

Thanks!

Subject: Microsoft Controller + Wireless Adapter

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

TL/DR: Microsoft Controller + Wireless Adapter works well and has less lag compared to standard Xbox one controller with Wifi/Bluetooth adapter.

I just wanted to share my initial experience with the Microsoft Controller + Wireless Adapter.

I originally had difficulty getting a regular Xbox one controller to work with my wifi/Bluetooth adapter but after a firmware update of the Xbox controller, it worked with the Mister, albeit with noticeable lag. This lag was enough to keep me searching for a better option.

I had read that 2.4 ghz adapters had less lag compared to Bluetooth adapters and I read somewhere that the official Microsoft controller adapter uses 2.4 ghz. I wasn't sure if that was true, but my interest was piqued. I searched for the Microsoft Wireless Adapter for Xbox controllers, but could not find a legitimate one. All the ones on Amazon or Ebay were marketed as OEM and were knockoffs.

It seems as the only real legitimate source currently is to buy the controller plus adapter combo pack. This combo pack runs for around 80 dollars at Best Buy and is currently on sale at Amazon for 70 dollars. Best Buy price matched for me, so I picked one up from them.

Setup is very straightforward. Plug adapter into Mister, turn on controller, press and hold the pairing button on controller, press pairing button on adapter and wait. Controller was recognized by the Mister but you'll still want to setup all the buttons. I set the sharing button on the controller as the Mister menu button. Everything seems to work perfectly.

I haven't extensively tested it, but after trying out a few platformers that I am very familiar with, the lag is not noticeable to me.

After turning the Mister off, the light intermittently flashes on the controller for about a minute and then turns off, so battery life should be good.

So far, I am pleased with the performance.

Subject: Passive vs Active cooling case

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Deciding between a passive aluminum case like misteraddons and an active cooling case like an “official” pcb case that ultimatemister sells with an noctua fan and copper heatsink.

I get that the cpu may be adequately cooled with a passive setup, but what about the other components inside the enclosed aluminum case. While the processor may be ok to run at hotter temperatures, what about the other things like sdram?

While the aluminum case looks like quality (albeit at a higher cost), Shouldn’t an active cooling solution with fan provide more cooling to the processor and all other components. While the aluminum case will pull heat off the core, won’t hot air still be trapped inside the case as the case will be hot, while an active solution will cool all air in the case at a lower cost?

Subject: Hate to be that guy, but is there any secret suppliers of DE-10 nano boards right now?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I back ordered one on digikey a few days ago and they just sent me an email that it won't be available until January. It was $240 after tax and shipping which is the best deal I could find. I looked at buying off terasic's website but they wanted +$40 for shipping and +$30 for "money wire"?. I was okay with waiting a month but 3 months is a bit much. What are my options, is it just scalpers or nothing if I want it before Christmas? I feel really dumb for waiting this long thinking manufacturing would finally catch up with demand.

Subject: Tip: You can change the 'static noise' background on the main menu and analog output.

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

The 'static noise' or 'snow' background that comes by default with the analog output when not using framebuffer feels like a troll to me, because when I output to a CRT TV, it looks like there's issues with sync or signal noise, which is funny because the MiSTer analog board sync signal is notoriously low and actually does have sync issues on many CRTs.

Anyway, if you add these two lines to the bottom of your MiSTer.ini, it'll use one of the image backgrounds (which you can cycle with F1 on the keyboard):

[Menu] direct_video=1

Ah, so much better

By putting it under the [Menu] header, it'll only affect the main menu, and not your games.

Subject: Question about Ultimate MiSTer Pro

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Hello all,

I recently bought a pre-assembled MiSTer off of eBay. I found it somewhat peculiar because instead of the USB hub having a barrel plug for power, it just had another USB port where its plug would be. This USB port, along with the one beside it, are both labeled as Power Only. The seller included a y-connector for the power supply, with one side being a barrel plug for the DE-10, and the other being a USB, presumably to power the USB hub via one of these Power Only ports.

Things have been going well so far, but I just couldn't figure out why this hub was different from everyone else's. Then I saw the Ultimate MiSTer Pro from Ultimate Mister.com: https://ultimatemister.com/product/ultimate-mister-pro

This case looks identical, and it also has the two USBs labeled as Power Only, with no barrel plug for the hub. I'm pretty sure that the seller must have bought one of these and sold it to me. Does anyone know about the Ultimate MiSTer Pro? Am I correct in thinking that I need to plug the USB from the y-connector into the Power Only port below the DE-10's barrel plug?

Subject: Wiring external LEDs

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Hey all,

I've been working on a home-made external case, but I'm having issues wiring external LEDs using the P4 / Ext. LEDs pins on the IO board. I got the Power LED to work by connecting the bottom two pins to an LED, and the User LED to the top two pins, but I can't seem to get the Disk LED to light up no matter which of the middle three pins I try.

Also, I've had a couple of external Power LEDs die, but I'm not sure if that's just because the LED kit I bought is of low quality or if it's an issue with my wiring.

To be clear, I have a lot of experience assembling/disassembling/playing around with electronics, but actual electric stuff like wiring and soldering is fairly new to me and I'm still learning. Any tips would be appreciated.

Subject: NeoGeo games white screen

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

When I launch a neo geo game, I just get a white screen. I did everything right, I don't know what else to do.

So I used Mr Fusion to get the basic files on my sd card. I didn't do update, but I don't want to. I always add my files on the SD card directly, no FileZilla like others pointed out.

I have my neogeo core in the root directory, a NeoGeo directory inside of games, which has the 3 bios + the romsets.xml. I'm sure the xml is fine, I've tried different uni-bios versions with always the right name, I've tried getting the sfix and 000-lo from different places.

In the neogeo directory, I have all the game directories, with the right names and 1 .neo per directory. The .neo are named the same as their directory. I'm pretty sure I have the right set, as I compared one of my .neo crc32 to someone else's who posted it on a forum. I got the darksoft ones and used the darksoft to neo conversion tool.

I haven't changed the bootcore or whatever, I haven't changed any file except add my neo geo files to the freshly build image made from mr fusion.

Also I'm very new to this. Thank you for your help.

Subject: SD Card size

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Hi

So gonna attempt my first attempt at a Mister build this week. I plan on putting art my Roms and Images on a external HDD as I have a bunch of them so makes sense for now. What size SD card will I need for the Mister software and cores anything else required to be on the SD assuming no Roms etc will be stored on it, obviously I understand things change and the project will grow so if I don't wanna be too tightly packed in but don't want to waste to space either?
