I've got two Pis set up with old school joysticks and d-pads - and a third one running a BBS of dubious security.

I already have it. I suppose we'll need to make a private C-64 Warez room.

There are a bunch of Telnet C-64 BBSes that have it up still too. This is what I've been saying for a while - about how we're going to end up going old-school, like this - to get away from the pervasive and insidious nature of how modern technology has been engineered to take away the consumer advantage and give it to the corporation and the State.

This BBS - you've got to make an account and log in - you can't crawl this message... so it is kind of invisible to Nintendo.

But the Telnet C-64 BBSes are even MORE invisible. They would have to hire real people to go out and log into every one of them and in a lot of cases, befriend the Sysop so that they could get private access to the file transfer room.

More or less - Nintendo is fucked. SMB C64 is a genie out of the bottle, and they're NEVER going to get it put away again. They might as well just fucking give up. Sell the guy who wrote it a license for $1 and let him distribute for free - because this is Nintendo's Metallica Napster moment - they're going to burn their bridges being butthurt about a piece of software what is basically a bootleg tape that is about LOVING Nintendo. They're not going to lose ONE sale over it - and if they allowed it, they would score so much good will with fans.

They're idiots.

If they were really smart they'd buy it off the guy and resell it for a buck a copy.

Nah. At a buck a copy, they would make $36 bucks, and then once it was out there again, all the Commodore geeks would pirate it 36,000,000,000 times. We're like scorpions on the back of a frog. It is in our nature.

Better just to sell the guy a license and then release it on the C-64 Platform into the public domain. They can still control copyright EVERYWHERE else and make it freely distributable ONLY for C64. And that is what they should do. And make it LICENSED for that.
Instead... they tried takedown notices. Which just pissed off geeks everywhere and made us go.... "oh... fuck US?!? No.... fuck YOU!!!"

C-64 fans wouldn't pay on a Pay What You Want basis? That seems like the perfect nexus of respect and importunity. C-64 got millions of us going and launched hundreds of thousands of highly lucrative careers. If there's no "Fuck you" then there's no "No, fuck YOU!", right?

We liked stuff free when it was highly illegal. Now it is quasi-legal - and we like it free even MORE. :)

Hardware will get paid for. But making money off software on a 30 year old machine is a pretty tough sale.

Although some companies are selling homebrew software for retro platforms and making money, so it can be done.

Woot. Not sure what I'm going to do with this yet, but it ought to be something cool.

I feel the same way about the 400.  It's really cool and I want one, but I haven't bought one because I haven't figured out exactly what I'd *do* with it.

Don't let that stop you. I'm surfing my BBS like it is 1989 right now with my expensive new FPGA toy - and it is kinda awesome. I won't ALWAYS connect this way - the web interface has a lot of advantages for someone as verbose as I am - but it is still a sweet nostalgia kick. I even have scanlines. Simulated - but they're actually working quite well.
