Well, ASCII - you've also got to understand - the members of Sac Citadelphia are a particularly crusty, crotchety, group of grumpy old men and women disillusioned with telecommunications, Citadel, and one another - in general.
We weren't a REAL pleasant group of people even when we all more or less enjoyed arguing with one another incessantly.
I've managed to get about three of them to call into this BBS. And they're not necessarily the ones who still kind of like me.
🤣😂😜
Wed May 12 2021 19:50:04 MST from ASCII ExpressNo, we definitely did not think of what we did as historically important. We took it for granted. Then the internet and horrible social media came along.
Hey, PD! As one of those three, I like you better as Paranoid Delusions than I did as Metallica! Like wine, you've improved with age!
I was Paranoid Delusions for longer on Citadel back in the day than I was Metallica.
But for some reason, people wouldn't let the Metallica go. :)

I was MetallicA pretty early in the game... like 86... So... eventually we were *legion* - but I was the "first".
By that time, I ditched it. Paranoid Delusions was the one that stuck - but I also used The Walkin' Dude, and Flexible Moralities quite a bit.
I love it today when I'm in a flame war and someone calls me out on my handle because they disagree with me...
"Yeah, dumbass - I've been using this handle since 1987 to sarcastically call out idiots who fell back on claiming I was suffering from paranoid delusions when they couldn't win the argument without resorting to ad hominems... so, you're about 35 years late on being original with THAT observation..."

I went through old userlogs looking for something else and tripped over this.. you ARE the same one who used The Valley (cbase c64 bbs on dialup, then telnet) since one of your "handles" during the days of centipede and color64 and cbase and abbs happened to be metallica...
That part isnt important. what IS important is that you are one that understands that we own the content, we contribute the content. we choose the bbs transport to distribute the content.
little known facts.. linux was born of commodore roots. chuck ritchie developed the hierarchy that we use today. remember your roots when you issue cd /etc. Also- http came from an apple 2.
I sound like an old fart. One of those old grandpas that say its not as good as it used to be.
HOWEVER I see civil war fans donning gear and clothing reenacting battles. They seem to be having fun with shit that was front page news in 1812. We must push forward.
If the userlog let you do a trailing cap in your name, and the handle was MetallicA - then it was almost certainly me. As more people used that name, most of them didn't capitalize the final A. :)
That is pretty cool, though. Do you have a copy of the userlog? I'd like to put it in one of the Archive directories here. :)

NOT ONLY do I have a copy of the userlog, BUT ALSO I have the entire cbase bbs frozen in time that can be spun up in running form at will. Its last iteration was via telnet. Citadel already does the telnet part of it, so the endgame reason I am actively working on the .js and CSS and other stuff in Citadel for Doors is to work for us would be for the Valley BBS to be another Door within my citadel. Big learning curve so far, but now I know more about BerkleyDB than I ever thought I would need to. No worries, I was a Vax/VMS database guy and if you can stomach that nightmare, freeform databases and structured databases are child's play. I just wish I had a better roadmap of what citadel actually sets out to DO before it DOES it. There may be docs online about this but I guess I am too stupid to find them so I will just entertain myself by doing it backward. That has always yielded the best results for me. When I cook something following a recipe it tastes poisonous. When I just fcking wing it, people beg me for the recipe. It makes for things that work great but auditing my code... just tar and feather me now and make me wear a bright orange traffic cone on my head. I wrote a crillion lines of code on Monday, on Tuesday revised them and today realized I had already conquered this in April.

That is awesome.
My approach is very similar. I learn by doing... I mean, I read, I don't understand the concepts, if I do it, it starts to click together - so, my first few attempts are always fucking it all up and going back to RTFM and by the time I'm good, there is a lot of fairly disorganized foundation under whatever it is.
But it works for me.

Even with a small program like the one I currently write I made that same error. I wrote a test, then to my surprise it passed, and I realized I already implemented the feature and tested it in another example.
Good luck on your doors code. I know Citadel also has an API if that helps, but I've never looked at it. If you can handle Vax/VMS then you can handle this!
The challenge is moving forward while retaining backwards compatibility.
Oh wait, that's how software should work.
I didn't plan to throw away any versions, but there have been many alphas that didn't live through the same day.
Tue Jun 01 2021 19:25:42 MST from ASCII ExpressYeah with a large project you should plan to throw away one version.

If I plan shit, I never get out of the planning stages. If I wing it I succeed on my first try and god help you if you need an explanation of how it works because I don't fucking know, I wasn't paying attention and I really don't remember, but I can tell you what I was listening to while I did it.
I suffer this problem too - but a couple of decades in Corporate IT helped me really improve at it.

I bet. Some more practice would probably help, too.
Had some scheduled ISP downtime today. Only the webcrawlers and hax0rz probably noticed - we apologize to them for the inconvenience.
I saw your account in the new user log and was excited. Make yourself at home - feel free to say whatever you want, even if it is about me - huge horrible flamewars where people say things they regret are absolutely allowed him. Kick tables over and start a riot...
Or, just sit around and get along with the small handful of users who visit. Whatever works.
We're pretty rule free around here. :)
