Subject: Can I use a scandoubler/ flicker fixer with a VGA CRT monitor?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I have an Amiga RGB-VGA scandoubler/ flicker fixer and so far I've only used it with an LCD flatscreen monitor.

My old commodore monitor just died and so I'm wondering, is there any reason I couldn't get a slightly more modern CRT VGA monitor to replace it, and use the scandoubler with that? Would it produce similar results to using a 15khz CRT monitor? The 2000-era CRT monitors are so much more available and cheaper than the old 15khz ones so I'm thinking this might be a good option.

Hi folks.

Feel free to drop in and say hi during tomorrow evening's Super Cars 2 tournament if you're at a loose end - can't promise a polished broadcast, but can be fairly certain you'll hear quite a lot of cursing...damn those tunnel mines.

Subject: 16 bit battle!

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Ok, here's the big question, how does the Amiga compare to the megadrive/genesis and SNES/super Famicom in terms of graphics and sound in games? I'm going to massively over simplify things here to start with but back in the day I always thought that the Amiga had much better sound quality from the Paula sound chip and higher resolution graphics compared to the SNES and megadrive. Obviously the 16 bit consoles were more engineered towards gaming and more effectively moved sprites and backgrounds around the screen but I fully believe that the best coders for the Amiga OCS/ECS could outstrip the 16 bit consoles when they really tried.

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Are there any idiots guides? I'm honestly just completely lost and have no idea what to do.

I have scummvm, some games, WB 3.1.4 and yeah like nothing happens when i try and run it.

The videos online are vague and i'm kind of at the end of my rope here and realistically just don't understand what else i need to do.

so ah yeah, help!?

Subject: Recommended upgrades for A500/A1200

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Background: I'm a C64 guy, grew up with that machine, learnt how to code, crack games, make trainers and some basic electronics. I also spent a lot of time playing with my friend's A500 Plus.

I've recently bought an A500 + 1084S monitor and an A1200. The A500 has 1 mb of RAM.

My question for the experts here: what are the recommended upgrades for the machines after the obvious GOTEK drive? I'm seeing people talking about upgrading the A1200 RAM to 8MB, Real-Time Clocks, FPUs and even faster processors.

I'll mainly be playing classic games and potentially some of the "modern retro" releases which I've missed over the years. Also want to use the A500 to get my oldest two kids (6/8) into computing with the A1200 (and my MiSTER set-up) being for papa.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
