I already said I was not Larry. And your message composition did imply Larry and Bill were both dead, and yet, Bill was mentioned in another room and it made it sound like he was still alive. ;)
Good luck with your Covid-19 test!
Wed Dec 30 2020 06:45:08 PM MST from ParanoidDelusionsAre you LARRY REZNICK?!?
He isn't dead - that was just bad composition on my part. Bill Belon is also alive.
But there are yet OTHERS who have died - and they won't be the last, unfortunately. At some point, someone from Citadelphia will surely be talking about you and I in the past tense.
Speaking of which, my boss is Covid-19, which means I got some pretty heavy exposure over the last two weeks, most likely. My test is tomorrow.Wed Dec 30 2020 17:28:36 MST from Otto RobotoLarry Reznick is dead? I must have missed that. When did that happen?
Okay, you have used my real name, but only in talking about other things. Unless I missed a specific message where you directly named me. And if that happened, then I am sorry I missed it and have mislead you. Now I need to figure out h9w to go back and read all the messages to see if you did guess directly and I overlooked it.
Tue Dec 29 2020 04:34:28 PM MST from ParanoidDelusionsI actually feel further away from the answer now than at the start. I can't think of any other regulars I haven't named off already. Bill Belon, Larry Reznick, the others are dead. You can't be Gerhard - or I only knew them by online pseudonyms. Also, there aren't any left.
It is interesting seeing you in those documents.
Interesting thing about those docs. They have a create date of 2010. That must have been when I grabbed them. And they're not Yoyodyne archives - they're DDBBS archives.
I did a search for that, thinking there might be more out there and it might give me clues - but wherever I grabbed them appears to be long gone.
Tue Dec 29 2020 11:38:44 MST from Otto RobotoOh, I have plenty of 5.25 drives, including the one that was on the BBS computer. The hard part is going to be getting anything of the hard drive at all. You are correct that Hotel was not up at the end, I think it was due to hardware failure. Vince ran DDBBS-II on TRS-80 Model II hardware after he transposed it from Jerry's Heath hardware. I also do not remember what Brent's BBS was called, it might have been Novucitivis or something similar.
So, do you have it nailed down as to who I am yet? There should be plenty of clues given in the last dozen messages...
No luck so far. I think it might be on one of my old JAZZ or ZIP cartridges. I would have to pull out a whole machine from the museum to get one of those running again though. When's the last time you saw a parallel printer port? Ha!
Wed Dec 30 2020 08:05:46 PM MST from ParanoidDelusionsAny luck with these? I'd like to turn this into a sort of only history vault of Sacramento Citadelphia. I didn't have as much as I remembered - but what I had was an interesting insight to how far ahead of the curve we were, how much influence we had on the later development of the culture and attitudes of the Internet - how we were a big part of the genesis of social media.
grep -iRl "Pagan Flames" ./ is the tool that did it for me.
But you could put just about anything in there. "Jerry Moore" "MetallicA" or "DDBBS". If it is mentioned in the file, it'll find it.
Fri Nov 20 2020 22:59:07 MST from Otto RobotoI used to have a bunch of those kind of files around here. I have not looked for them in a while, so no idea where they could be and with 80 TB have data (yes I am a digital hoarder too) on my main workstation, it would be a job to try and find them. But, that being said, I will try and take a quick peak and see what I can dig up.
There is one other message that you mention 3 names and dismiss them as not being options, but have tried saying I am 2 of those 3 names.
You have already guessed Jim Earl before, and I have mentioned that I have been in contact with Jim Earl a few times in the last few years.
In fact, Jim visited me in the hospital when I had the double pulmonary embolisms a few years ago. I was thankful to have survived that! So, if Jim was here, he could tell you who I am, just based on that clue.
Wed Dec 30 2020 09:14:16 PM MST from ParanoidDelusionsSo, the only names I can find that I dismissed are Pagan Flames, Gerhard - and I haven't guessed Brent, but the clues you have given all dismiss Brent.
The only other name I think I haven't actually guessed is Jim Earl, and I feel like I've dismissed. No "B" in that anywhere...
Are you Jim Earl? Actually, based on all the clues, and all the misses - I guess that is the only one that is *left*. I do remember sitting and having some conversations with Jim Earl at some MUPT - maybe the one across from the place where the Byte Brokers opened their second store at Howe About Arden...
Wed Dec 30 2020 18:46:44 MST from ParanoidDelusionsOk. Well, this should be enough to get me on the right track. Give me a while after dinner to do some sleuthing. :)
Wed Dec 30 2020 18:14:59 MST from Otto RobotoOkay, just went back and read thru all the messages in the 3 or 4 rooms that this conversation is spread thru, and although you have used my real name in passing, you have not directly assigned it to me.
In fact, you outright dismissed it as not a viable option at one point. And these are a few of the clues that you have missed. So, although you think you have guess all the people who used real names, you may have mentioned them, but not "guessed" them.
lol...
Sorry if I am being to strict on the "Guessing" part... hehehe
I actually have a parallel ZIP drive and the systems to hook it up to. If it is on ZIP, I might be able to recover it if there is no click of death. :)

We need a grep command for the Citadel database. If I were good enough, I suppose I could just set up a query in the DB that runs Citadel. Alas, I am not a DBA or DBE. :)

Well, whoever TF you are... have an awesome new year and a better year ahead than the one behind. :)
I'll go back the sleuthing through the BBS for the answer tomorrow. It isn't a clue, at this point. It is an easter egg hunt.

I have not looked at installing Citadel/UX so I don't know what database engine it uses. I have been a DBA so might be able to help you out with a query.

I would have to gather up all the ZIP disks and drive from Sacramento to Arizona. Might be quicker to pull equipment out, clean it and set it up instead.
With retirement right around the corner, I will soon have time to do either one! ;)

Well, if you ever decide to make the trip this way, keep those zip disks in mind.
Of course - you could also just ship them. :)

Where ya been, Otto Roboto?
Working a lot. Playing Final Fantasy 14 online, in game deadlines the last 2 weeks. And last, but not least, lurking on here...

I could never get into Final Fantasy. But that seems like a clue.

I've started playing Final Fantasy when it first arrived in the United States. Took a few years break while raising the kids, but got into FF14 about 3 years ago, ironicaly, because my youngest kid, who is in his 30s, got me into it again.

I played one on on the original Gameboy decades ago. You got to the end and you had to fight some boss who told you, "I am God".
I don't think it was actually God. But the whole thing had such a strange Japanese vibe to it. Japanese culture is so strange - the themes that matter to them in this kind of fiction. I'm sure our games like Ultima 3 that inspired them feel the same way to them - but the one I played had a real emphasis on - you know, some little old lady giving you a side quest to rescue her pig that had wandered off into the mountains. The Japanese FRPs are all very Kawaii. Your knight is a cute little round faced, big eyed anime avatar, the monsters are all cute... I prefer the Western "gritty and realistic" comic style for FRPing.
30 year olds with fond memories of growing up with Nintendo seem to really eat this shit up, though. It certainly has a far larger market than my preferred style of gaming. :)

This is awesome. I wish I could convince more people from the Citadel Group on Facebook to log in - they won't... because I'd like to have these archives become very active - and I suspect that if they were all coming, we would be able to really build a collection of this stuff.
They're so caught up in the present - and seriously - I think they're all honestly sick of one another. They don't seem to want to relive or share it with one another anymore.
That is sad. Even the ones who agree with me on other issues don't seem keen to log in. And then some, like James and David Goolsby and David Lemson... to a certain degree - even Alan Hollinger - seem to have cancelled me because they simply disagree with my politics and can't get over that. David sent me letters on a regular basis when he was at the School of the Americas in Israel... pictures of him learning how to handle an Uzi. Now he works for Microsoft and is pretty Left leaning and pretty much avoids me. It's probably for the best in that case - I'm a career liability for him. I'm prone to say things like, "Whoopi Goldberg is right - it wasn't about race..."
What are you gonna do. At least we've got us.
